Indicators of Diarrhea Control

Three aspects of diarrhea control interventions are measured through indicators:
1. Indicators of Diarrhea Prevention
2. Indicators of Diarrhea Treatment
3. Indicators of ORT use

1. Indicators of Diarrhea Prevention
a. Percentage of population using
• Improved drinking water sources (urban, rural & total)
– (2005-2006)For India: Urban-97%, rural -90% and total- 92%
• Improved sanitation facilities (urban, rural & total)
– For India: urban-58%, rural-23% and total-34%
b. Percentage of one yr olds immunized against measles (India – 74%)
c. Percentage of children who are:
• Underweight in 0 – 59 months of age (India – 43%)
• Stunted in 0 – 59 months of age (India – 38.7%)
• Exclusively breast fed in 0 – 5 months of age (India – 46%)
• Breast fed with complementary feeding in 6 – 9 months of age (India – 57%)
• Still breast feeding in 20 – 23 months of age (India – 77%)
d. Vitamin A supplement coverage (% with full coverage) in 6 – 59 months age (India – 53%)

2. Indicators of Diarrhea Treatment
Percentage of children <5, with diarrhea receiving:
a) ORT with continued feeding (India 33%)
b) ORS packet (India 26%)
c) Recommended home available fluids (India 20%)
d) Increased fluids (India 10%)
e) Continued feeding (India 70%)

3. Indicators of Oral Rehydration Therapy
Percentage of children <5, with diarrhea receiving ORT (ORS packet or recommended HAF with continued feeding):
a) Gender: India- male 34%, female 31%
b) Residence: urban 38%, rural 31%
c) Wealth index quintiles:
a) Poorest: 29% (2005-2006)
b) Second: 29% (2005-2006)
c) Middle: 35% (2005-2006)
d) Richest: 45% (2005-2006)
