Borehole vs. Dug-Well Latrines: A Comparison

Borehole Latrine vs Dug-Well Latrine: Differences, Similarities & Public Health Importance

Borehole Latrine: A borehole latrine is a deep, narrow pit drilled into the ground using mechanical or manual boring techniques.

  • It may be lined with bamboo matting or earthenware rings to prevent collapse.

Dug-Well Latrine: A dug-well latrine consists of a wider, shallower pit that is manually excavated.

  • It needs lining materials like bricks, stones, or concrete rings.
  Borehole Latrine Dug-Well Latrine
Depth 4 – 8 meter (13 – 26 feet) 3– 3.5 meters (10 – 12 feet)
In sandy soil, the depth of the pit may be reduced to 1.5 to 2 m (6-7 ft.).
Diameter Narrow (30–40 cm) (12 – 16”) Wide (75 cm) (30”)
Construction Method Drilled using boring tools like Auger Excavated manually hence easier to construct
Lining May need to be lined with bamboo matting or earthenware rings Mostly require a brick or concrete lining to prevent collapsing
Cost Higher due to drilling equipment Lower, as it requires manual labor
Lifespan 5 – 6 people/ over 1 year Longer, family of 4 – 5 people/>5 years
Mechanism of excreta (nightsoil) purification Excreta undergo anaerobic decomposition, gradually breaking down into a stable, harmless substance with a greatly reduced volume. The action of the dug well latrine is the same as in the borehole latrine, i.e., anaerobic digestion.
Usage Once filled up to just 50 cm (20”) from ground level, it is sealed off using soil. The squatting plate is also removed.
Another hole is bored using the auger drill for further use
Once filled, it is closed.
While another pit is being used, its content undergo anaerobic digestion and the greatly reduced and innocuous mass thus produced can be manually removed, enabling re-use
Advantages ✔Space-efficient (takes up less land)
✔The pit is dark & does not support fly breeding.
✔When positioned at least 15 m (50 ft.) from a water source, there is minimal risk of water pollution.
✔ More affordable and easier to construct
✔ No need for specialized equipment
✔ Can be built in many soil types
Disadvantages Small capacity: Fills up rapidly
Construction needs specialized equipment: an auger: may not be readily available.
When the subsoil water is high and the soil is loose, excavating a hole deeper than 3 m (10 ft.) may be challenging.
Regular emptying is required for re-use
More land area is needed

Borewell versus Dug-well latrine

Similarities between borehole and dug-well latrines
1. Purpose: Both are designed for human waste disposal, for sanitation in areas lacking sewer systems.
2. Basic Structure: Each consists of a pit, a cover slab, and a superstructure for privacy and hygiene.
3. Environmental Considerations: Both can contribute to groundwater contamination if not properly located and constructed. Safe distance from water sources is crucial.
4. Mechanism of excreta disposal is anaerobic digestion in both types:

  • The depth ensures that waste is compacted over time, reducing odor and contamination risks.
  • Liquid Absorption and Seepage: Liquid waste seeps into the surrounding soil
